The Coaching Practice

Enabling change and inspiring curiosity

“Everyone needs a coach.”
Bill Gates

At the Coaching Practice, we co-create with our clients to design curriculums that stimulate and enable change in the workplace for groups and individuals.

Our goal is sustainable change. We achieve this by facilitating a learning pathway that accelerates learning retention. Extensive bodies of research indicate one and done does not work. Ever.

Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Successful People illustrates that if you want to change results you must first change the behaviours. We believe that behaviour change is the key ingredient.

And that is where we come in.

TRAINING

Our approach recognises that the destination precedes design. We seek to truly understand what the organisation or individual is aiming for. We aim to come from a direction of expertise - not of knowing better. We collaborate with you to create bespoke sales and leadership programmes to suit your distinct needs, developing bespoke learning pathways that support a more effective exploration of the knowledge and skills required to execute effectively in your role.

Simon Sinek says, “When we help ourselves we find moments of happiness; when we help others we find fulfilment.” These words capture the importance of building a coaching capability, and the spirit of what we offer. Our coaching programmes are designed to inspire, enable and build those all-important coaching muscles using a series of hands-on workshops and Practicum sessions that are underpinned by a wholly experiential approach to learning.

OUR WORK IN CONTEXT

In the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, Stephen Covey suggests that for any change to occur, there needs to be convergence of three critical factors: knowledge, skills, and motivation.

Here, we’ve used these principles to illustrate our typical approach to learning.

Knowledge

The importance of acquiring knowledge cannot be underestimated. It is the foundation of all learning, and the seat of understanding.

We do this by helping you build further your knowledge toolbox by introducing you to tools, and models codified by thought leaders in their respective fields. We invite you to critically appraise all the ideas we present and to challenge some of your own assumptions to determine how best you can find what works best for you.

Our goal here is help you expand your thinking and develop more options which in turn will you give you more choices back in the workplace.

We will never suggest that any idea or study on its own is ‘the answer’, for the answer, more often than not, will lie within you.

Skills

Acquisition of knowledge in itself is not enough, though. It all comes down to effective application. We’ll always provide you with opportunities to practice what you’re learning. Not only will this concrete your learning, but it will also give our team the chance to find out more about what works for you in the context of your workflow and own personal development goals.

Experiential learning is a critical phase of embedding new knowledge. Experiencing what you have learned – not just repeating it or recalling it – will build new neural pathways to a greater understanding of the subject matter. We will set a series of group and individual tasks in a classroom-style environment, and we will always incorporate reflective learning phases into our programme designs.

To accelerate your learning and introduce further complexity, we will use outside space to our advantage. We will work with a bunch of outdoors experts with a range of skills, from starting fires using friction through to climbing and caving. The purpose here is to take you firmly away from your comfort zone, and deeply into your learning zone.

“Excellence demands planned, deliberate practice of increasing difficulty.”

Anders Eriksson

Motivation

Psychological science – and the endless studies within the field – strongly indicate that motivation comes from within. In fact, this is referred to as intrinsic motivation.

However, we recognise that we, as your coaches, have significant roles to play in creating a safe, positive and encouraging environment for learning that serves as your extrinsic motivation. Doing so will have a profound impact on your desire to learn, contribute, and take risks.

In essence, we believe that only the motivated can motivate. And this is where we can help.

“Human beings have an innate inner drive to be autonomous, self-determined and connected to one another. And when that drive is liberated, people achieve more and lead richer lives.”
